“Traditional forms of therapy use a standardized system of diagnosis for every patient. We call this the Cinderella approach… if the shoe fits, great! However, when it comes to your mental health, we need more flexibility than a glass slipper.

The Problem-Solving Brief Therapy Model does not limit behavior to the confines of a diagnosis; instead, the model attempts to contextualize behavior within a social space. Ultimately, it is the client’s unique situation that offers the best avenue toward positive change.”
— Karin Schlanger, MFT

How does Problem-Solving Therapy work?

The model lets us understand that as we try to deal with problems, our attempted solutions have not produced the change that we desire. They are acts of great intentions with failed outcomes. Together we analyze previously attempted solutions, understand their interaction within the system and work to create strategic solutions. Through our systemic view, we are able to suggest solutions that reverse established paradigms and effectively deliver positive results.

From our very first meeting we focus on action. Change is the desired outcome so that is our focus, it guarantees that clients notice a difference. The aim is to disrupt the status quo.

What can I expect from a session?

We start the conversation with a phone call where I familiarize myself with your unique situation and get a sense of how the Problem-Solving Model will be applied.

At our first session, we will meet in my office where we will work to identify what brought you to pursue a change in your life. Together we work to answer:

  • What should be the focus of the therapy?

  • How will you know your goal has been achieved?

What comes after the first session is entirely based on how we answer these two questions. Different strategies are formulated for each client’s identified focus and goal.

Therapy in Spanish, English, and French

I offer therapy in Spanish, English and French to ensure that I can deliver change to people across language barriers. I was born, raised and educated in Argentina before moving to the United States where I have lived for over 35 years. I am also proficient in German and Italian, and I can understand traditional arabic text. To me, it’s incredibly important that clients have the ability to express their situations in their native language because your first is your emotional language.
